Tips to Write Better Essays and Score High on PCS Exam

The Punjab Civil Services exam is one of the most reputed and toughest examinations conducted at the state level. PCS is held by Punjab Public Service Commission for recruitment of different services and posts for state administrations. Since PCS examination can be a hard nut to crack, therefore, requires a great deal of time, preparation and dedication. Essay writing is one of the scoring yet difficult sections of the exam. Many times, students are often seen complaining that they fail in the exam, despite working so hard and reading so much. If you find this situation relatable to you, we have got you covered.  In this blog, we will be sharing several useful tips that would help you understand the problems and write better answers. We will also explain how joining the right PCS Coaching Institute In Chandigarh can prove out to be a game changer.

Tips to Write Better Essays

Hating the writing section would not help in this matter. Instead, you need to ask yourself- “Did you analyze the question correctly? “Did you examine it critically?” “Did you answer the question correctly? Answering all these questions would help you understand the problems. In PCS, various questions are asked to test the analytic and critical abilities. Therefore, before you answer any question, examine, analyze and evaluate every question.

The other important things to consider are- understand the question completely and sticking to the word limit. When we say to understand the question completely, we mean get deeper into the topic and its details. Some questions may ask you to evaluate, in those questions, you have to pass a judgment about the authenticity of the statement in the given question based on evidence. You have to understand the question as there is a no scope for forming a personal opinion here. For the questions that require you to critically analyze, you need to conclude with fair judgment, after analyzing the nature of each component and interrelationship between them.

When it comes to writing down the answers, having information is one thing and putting the information in a structured way is another. Before you start writing, we advise you to create an outline of the essay, structure it well, explain the points and write in a simple language. Start your answer with an impressive introduction. Put all the information, facts, quotes and stories to build your body and finally moving towards the conclusion.

In order to improve your essay writing skills for the exam, you need to read some good essays. Reading good essays would help you understand how to begin an essay, write arguments and conclude. Reading newspapers and general topics like women, education, healthcare, Internet and science can also help.

Time is the greatest decision maker. There are no hard and fast rules for time division but do it in such a way that you are able to complete your exam in time. For essay writing, we recommend you giving 5 minutes for topic selection, 15 minutes for brainstorming, 1 hour for essay writing and last 5 minutes for revising the essay. You can adjust the time as per your skills and capabilities. Whatever time division you choose, leave ample time for proofreading and editing at the end.
